Philadelphia man Detained for Flying Drone too Close to NFL Draft

All Johnathan Kolleh wanted to do was shoot footage of skateboarders in a Philadelphia park with his FAA-registered drone. Instead, the aspiring filmmaker found himself handcuffed and detained for nearly 14 hours last week because the park was located near the NFL Draft. Deadspin reports that Kolleh stressed to multiple members of law enforcement what he was doing. However, even though his drone didn't breach the no-fly zone near the draft, he was still arrested on suspicion of reckless endangerment. “I understand procedure, I understand law is law and procedure is procedure,” Kolleh said. “But if three waves of law enforcement—the bike cops, the detectives, the SWAT unit—verified that I’m not up to anything, that my drone is registered with the FAA, that I’m not doing anything wrong, then whoever is on top should have taken their word for it." Deadspin did find, however, that the Philadelphia District Attorney's office rejected the police's attempt to file reckless endangerment charges against Kolleh.
