Teens Addicted to Cell Phones Instead Of Drugs?

USA, New Jersey, Couple sitting in living room, using laptop and cell phone

I just read a new research suggests that teenage drug use may be at a new low because adolescents are now getting their kicks from smartphones. According to this article in The New York Times, teen usage of cigarettes, drugs and alcohol has declined over the same time as their tablet and smartphone usage has exploded. "Playing video games, using social media, that fulfills the necessity of sensation-seeking, their need to seek novel activity," says substance abuse expert Dr. Silvia Martins. Adds David Greenfield, founder of The Center for Internet and Technology Addiction, "People are carrying around a portable dopamine pump and kids have basically been carrying it around for the last 10 years." I suppose if I had to chose, I'd say go tablet or cell phone crazy. the addiction can be annoying but not deadly!
