Sam Smith Praises Emma Thompson For Speaking Out On Weinstein Scandal

Sam Smith had nothing but praise for Emma Thompson speaking out against Harvey Weinstein. The singer tweeted early Friday (October 13) morning, “POWERFUL words from Emma Thompson this morning about Harvey Weinstein. F**king RESPECT!!”

On BBC2’s Newsnight, Emma Thompson gave a blunt interview regarding Weinstein’s role in casting couch culture was part of a systemic “public health” and gender crisis. Thompson referred to Weinstein as “the top of a very particular iceberg.” Of course, just as an iceberg only shows 10% above the water’s surface, the same applies to dangerous men in Hollywood, Thompson pointed out.

Thompson did not mince her words when she called the former executive out, stating, “I don’t think you can describe him as a sex addict, he’s a predator. That’s different. He’s at the top of, as it were the ladder of, a system of harassment and belittlement and bullying and interference. This has been part of our world, women’s world, since time immemorial.”

Though she had only clashed with Weinstein during the time when Miramax owned Nanny McPhee, Thompson said, “I mean, I’ve just said I’ve spent my 20s trying to get old men’s tongues out of my mouth, you know, because they just thought, ‘Well she’s up for it.’ So I would imagine that that happens really very regularly, and so perhaps this is a moment when we can say to men and women: ‘Open your eyes and open your mouths and say something.’”
