Mom Under Fire For Charging Her 5-Year-Old Rent

It's the role of a parent to teach their child the value and importance of money, but one mom in Georgia is being criticized because the way she's doing it is by making her five-year-old daughter pay rent.

Evans Essence explained on Facebook that she gives her daughter $7 each week in allowance, but then has her give $5 back - $1 for rent, $1 for water, $1 for electricity, $1 for cable and $1 for food. Her child is free to do whatever she wants with the remaining $2.

The $5 for "expenses" is actually going into a savings account for the girl, which Evans plans to give her when she turns 18. At that point, if things continue this way, her daughter will have a nice nest egg of $3,380 she can use to begin her life as an adult.

Evans wrote, "This strategy not only prepares your children for the real world, but when they see how much real bills are they will appreciate you for giving them a huge discount."

Many people think it's not fair to do to a five-year-old.

Some people think she isn't charging enough:

But plenty support Evans's methods in teaching an important lesson:

Essence took to Facebook live to speak more about her controversial idea:

She was grateful for the dialogue her post created and was open to hearing other points of view. She stated, "We're not going to agree, we're not going to have the same parenting tactics."

She went on to say, "I really hope that I have motivated or inspired different parents across the world."
